Nieman Named to Lutheran Seminary Presidency; Kim To Become Interim Dean

Hartford Seminary President Heidi Hadsell announced Monday that The Rev. Dr. James Nieman, Academic Dean, will be leaving the Seminary at the end of July to become President of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. She also announced that The Rev. Dr. Uriah Kim, Professor of Hebrew Bible, will become Interim Academic Dean of Hartford Seminary, effective August 1.

Hartford Seminary hosted an evening gathering at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Saturday, May 12 -- partly to enjoy the Museum’s new “Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia,” and partly to enjoy a reception in the company of Seminary supporters, program partners, students, graduates, trustees, faculty, staff, and old and new friends

Black Ministries Program Banquet

Bishop Thomas Hoyt To Speak at Hartford Seminary

Senior Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt, Jr., Presiding Prelate of the Seventh Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, will be the main speaker at the 2012 Graduation Banquet of the Black Ministries Program, which he founded. The banquet will be held on May 31. The Black Ministries Program (BMP) is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Students Honored

Hartford Seminary Awards Three Writing Prizes

Amy Poppinga, a student in the International Ph.D. program, Jean Amos Lys, a student in the Master of Arts Program, and Tricia Pethic, a student in the Islamic Chaplaincy Program, have been awarded prizes for their scholarship and writing. The recipients of the three prizes will be recognized at graduation ceremonies on June 1.

Hartford Seminary held a reception honoring Professor Ingrid Mattson on Monday, May 7. Dr. Mattson was praised for her scholarship, her service to the community, her leadership, and her piety.

Exchange Visitor Program

Hartford Seminary is pleased to announce that it has received U.S. Department of State approval to host international research scholars. The Seminary now will offer international scholars the opportunity to engage in research, teach, and lecture. The Seminary is offering the Exchange Visitor Program to contribute to a better understanding of American values and institutions through the exchange of ideas and experiences. The program helps to broaden the research scholars’ knowledge in their area of expertise by using Hartford Seminary’s resources for their research.

At a May 10 dinner, Hartford Seminary and Heidi Hadsell, President of the Seminary, received the Rev. Dr. Richard B. Griffis Award, presented by the Connecticut Council for Interreligious Understanding, for their deep commitment and ongoing contributions to interreligious understanding. Photos now available.

New research

Profile of Nondenominational and Independent Churches Released

The 2010 U.S. Religious Congregations & Membership Study was released on May 1 by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies. Scott Thumma, Professor of Sociology of Religion at Hartford Seminary, participated in the study, collecting data on non-denominational churches.
